Philadelphia Museum of Art free entry, hours and tickets

How to get in free or cheap

The museum is not free every day, but it has two pay-what-you-wish options: Fridays after 5pm and the first Sunday of each month. Under-19s are always free. We could not confirm student or senior rates on the official site: check the tickets page before you go.

• Book the pay-what-you-wish slot online if the museum offers it: weekends sell out.
• Friday evenings often have music and a lively atmosphere, but also more people.
• Bring ID if you enter as a minor or with a discount.

Best time to visit to avoid crowds

• Thursday or Monday at 10am is quietest, because the museum is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
• Avoid Saturday midday and first Sundays.
• Fridays after 5pm are busier because of pay what you wish.
• Do the Rocky Steps at the start or end of the day to avoid tour groups.

What costs extra

Special exhibitions may carry a supplement or short-term promotion, and parking is separate; see the parking and exhibition pages on the official site. As an alternative to the audio guide, the AnyArt app recognises works with your camera and tells their story.
