The route: 8 stops in 2 hours

Some galleries (the South Pavilion, the East Pavilion plaza-level galleries and the North Pavilion) were closed for renovation when checked, so this route focuses on the 19th-century painting collection, the campus and the gardens. Timings are approximate.

  1. 1

    0:00 · Garage → tram

    The tram up the hill

Leave the car and board the free electric tram. The five-minute ride is part of the experience.

  2. 2

    0:10 · Arrival plaza

    Richard Meier's architecture

Pause on the plaza before going in. The Italian travertine, white lines and changing light make the campus a work in itself.

  3. 3

    0:20 · West Pavilion · upper level

Irises — Vincent van Gogh (1889)

Painted at the Saint-Rémy asylum a year before his death. Look for the single white iris among the blues.

  4. 4

    0:35 · West Pavilion · upper level

    Monet, Manet and Cézanne

Look for the snow and light of Monet's Wheatstacks, Manet's Spring and Cézanne's almost sculptural fruit.

  5. 5

    0:55 · West Pavilion

    Turner and Romantic landscapes

Turner's skies point toward Impressionism; his view of Rome is painted in near-abstract light.

  6. 6

    1:10 · Central Garden

    Robert Irwin's Central Garden

A garden as sculpture, with a stream zigzagging down to a floating azalea maze. Give it 30 minutes.

  7. 7

    1:40 · Terraces · Cactus Garden

    Views and Cactus Garden

Finish at the south end of the campus: LA below and, on clear days, the Pacific.

  8. 8

    1:55 · Arrival plaza

    Tram back down

On the way out, point the AnyArt camera at anything else that catches your eye.

Tips to make the most of it

  • Arrive with your timed-entry reservation already booked.
  • Saturday evening is a lovely alternative: the campus stays open until 9pm and you catch the sunset.
  • Wear comfortable shoes; there are long ramps and stairs between pavilions.
  • Ask at the information desk which of these works are on view today.
